A sick feeling struck his stomach the first time he peeked behind the curtains. Words could not do justice to all of the emotions that were running through Jerry’s head at this point in time. He arose from his chair and grabbed his long brown hair which had previously been resting upon his shoulders and removed his hair band from his wrist and put it into a pony tail. It was the summer of 2000 and Jerry and his band were on the coast of Georgia in the state’s biggest music festival, The Big Fish. Not everyone got this opportunity to play and if you’re a musician who blows this shot, the likelihood of you having another chance is very slim. The sun was beginning to set and the cool ocean blew through the stage. At that moment there was a rush of blood to his head and his legs became weak as if he were leaning to kiss a girl for the first time, but this was far larger. When he looked up from the ground he saw a familiar figure across the backstage giving a subtle smirk and he started to regain his composure. He laughs under his breath and walks over to the blonde long-haired, tall stick figure, whose face was graced with a mustache that even Burt Reynolds would bow down to.
Phi Alpha Delta, Fraternity is a student organization for pre-law students working on their undergrad degree. Valdosta State University currently has an active chapter that strives to inform students of all of the necessary knowledge when considering law school. According to their page on Campus Connect, Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity, International is “a professional law fraternity advancing integrity, compassion and courage through service to the student, the school, the profession and the community” (Campus Connect, 2011).The organization is made up of the President Whitney Smith, the Vice President Max Loudermilch, the secretary Melody Brooks, the treasurer Taton Thompson, and their campus advisor Laverne Gaskins. Including these five members the club also has 21 active members.
Phi Alpha Delta does not limit itself to only students who are considering law school after graduation nor do they base their membership on things like race, religion, or national origin. Phi Alpha Delta was introduced to the VSU campus in 1990 but was an inactive group from 2005-2010. The group is nationally recognized by all major law schools and looks especially nice on a resume for someone who is considering applying to law school. Dues for the Fraternity are set at a one-time $100 initiation fee plus $10 dollars a month during the semester. Membership of the society also includes money off your total purchase from Brooks Brothers clothing and the Princeton Review study materials. Both of these companies provide an overall discount on purchases to members of Phi Alpha Delta. This organization meets twice a month on Wednesdays and usually their meetings last anywhere from thirty minutes to an hour. They usually talk about upcoming events and at the end of the meeting they will do one practice LSAT problem and dissect it.
This week may destroy me. With finals looming around the corner, im trying to mentally prepare. I have found though that the week before finals might be the worst. I have to do a website, a project, a paper, another paper, and little tedious worksheets. And finally as if i wasn’t stressed out enough i am worried about my final grade in my classes. My goal is to go to law school after college and maintaining a decent GPA is so crucial. Right now my GPA is in the middle 3.2/3.3 and if i tank all of my classes then my shot of going to the next level may be taken away from me. For the past two semesters i have bitten my nails about my grades until the last minute with the thought of failing a class or getting a C, but somehow i always seem to make Dean’s List. This semester is different though… I took a full course load and i have just been extremely bogged down with work, school and extracurricular activities. I am just praying that God gives me the strength to endure the hardships of the next upcoming week.
Last night i attended an extra credit info-session about careers in the communications field. Fortunately for me the two nice ladies who spoke were both working in the PR field, but yet left me scratching my head what if you weren’t a PR emphasis.. Did you just waste your time? Well the fact of the matter is that the two women who were there were PR officials at a hospital and school and that is no where close to where i want to be. I joined the communications dept. at the beginning of last spring and haven’t looked back. I won’t publish which pre-law dept. that i was in that sucked so bad, but after spending two years in there finishing my core it was pretty apparent they weren’t going to be much help in guiding me in my desired career path.
Even though i did change majors, i didn’t change the focus of what i wanted to do and that is to attend law school. The two law schools that i really have my sights set on, UGA law and Georgia State law, sorry no VSU law to choose from. I really want to learn about law and policies and structure. If you haven’t noticed the law is involved in everything that we do and i want to have a knowledge of all these rules, regulations, and policies. I doubt anyone will read this, but if you do know this, i write way better than this, it’s just early in the morning.
This morning i was browsing on my facebook like i always do, and if you’ve been on face book for a while you know that around political season, there is a potential for things to get ugly. Someone posted a picture of a billboard that is located in Athens, GA and it read “if you voted for the current president in 2008 to prove that you weren’t a racist, vote again in 2012 and prove that you’re not an idiot.”
Wow. Republicans can’t find a legitimate candidate so standard protocol would be to tarnish the current presidents “good” name. Regardless of whether your (R) or (D), I could care less. The last election hit the ground running at the end of my senior year in high school and elections took place my first semester. I could’ve cared less whether Obama or McCain had won, because quite frankly over the past twenty years there hasn’t been a president to run on a strong platform and fulfill everything he promised.
Clinton screwed us with sub-prime mortgages, Bush left America with an unnecessary dependency on big oil, and i haven’t seen Obama create one job. I wish that everyone had the same political stance that i did and just voted for the best candidate instead of being far right or far left, extremely conservative or extremely liberal. I will quote the late Gerald Ford in saying “A government big enough to give you everything you need, is big enough to take everything you have.”
In 7 more days everyone will begin packing to head back to their home and prepare for the meal of the year. The annual thanksgiving dinner has become an American staple, not only for food, but to give thanks and reflect on when pilgrims and indians shared the table to enjoy a meal.
Now i ask you as the reader, what is your favorite part of thankgiving? Is it the countless hours of fellowships with Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins that you won’t see until Christmas? Is it the large platter of turkey which is complimented with stuffing, green beans, potatoes, and mouth watering desserts? Maybe you’re just a big football fan and amongst all of this warm and fuzzy talk you would just like to stuff yourself to the absolute max with food and lay in the recliner all day.
Personally i enjoy it all and since being in college it has become a time to recharge my batteries to prepare for the final week of exams. Also it is an excellent opportunity to stock up funds, leftovers, and clean clothes to endure the long haul.
Have a happy thanksgiving
Right now on the east coast blue collar workers are beginning their day and know that five o clock cannot come soon enough. On the other side of the continental United States the day is just beginning and a quarterback by the name of Andrew Luck is writing history. He is having the best season for a quarterback that pro scouts have seen in fifteen years. The question i’m sure he asks himself everyday though is, Where will i land?
There are two teams right now with horrific records, the colts (0-9) and the dolphins (1-7). If you’re a fan of the greatest quarterback to never win a superbowl like myself (Dan marino) then you want to see Luck head to South Beach. Some though are saying that Andrew Luck needs to be drafted by the Indianapolis Colts and sit under Peyton Manning for two seasons before he blooms. BLASPHEMY! We are talking about Andy Luck, a once in a lifetime product that will waste two years of his life just sitting on a bench. The colts are a playoff team with Peyton Manning, who has at least 3-4 more seasons left on his NFL career. Yes the colts screwed up with never having a reliable backup like when the patriots had Matt Cassel, but they can still draft for the future this year. At this point in time the colts hold the rights to the number one pick and could hold it hostage for more picks, or players to fix a team that lacks depth. Why in the world would they 80 million dollars dedicated to one position, where only one of them can play at once?
